Basic Tassle
Picture
1.
Assemble supplies: hat, yarn in 1(+) colors, scissors, yarn needle, cardboard folded in half and cut appx 4 inches in width.
Picture
2.
Wrap yarn around width of cardboard with folded side down. Starting at the top, start winding the yarn around. Use one color or a few. Do from 30-50 complete winds around depending on how thick you want the tassle.
Picture
3.
On the open end of the folded cardboard, cut all yarns along the gap with sharp scissors, being careful to keep the yarns together.
Picture
4.
Cut (2) 14-inch lengths of yarn. These will attach the tassle to the hat and bind the tassle together.
Picture
5.
With one of the extra yarns, tie a triple-hand-over knot (surgeon's knot) firmly in the center of all tassle strands.
Picture
6.
Pull all yarns together.
Picture
7.
With other extra yarn, tie a surgeon's knot tightly, about 1/2 inch from top of tassle, creating a small 'ball' at the top.
Picture
8.
With yarn needle, bury ends in center of tassle.
Picture
9.
Adjust any yarns that need evening up at the top of the tassle.
Picture
10.
Trim tassle to desired length with sharp scissors.
Picture
11.
Tie a knot close to the ball of the tassle.
Picture
12.
Place knots every 1/2 inch for about 3 inches, if desired.
Picture
13.
Take one of the ends of the yarn and push through the top of the hat. Do the same to the other yarn, but do not go through the same hole.
Picture
14.
On inside of hat, tie yarns together and weave in.
